 Interesting book – the first chapter introduces, or at least makes mention of,  a “visitor” the Narrator and a Reader.   There are many beautiful sketches and line drawings throughout.

The Third Republic – the government of  France from 1870 to 1940 –  This is the setting in which the old man is writing.

Eiffel Tower – 1889 – so this book takes place at least a couple years after that was built.

first person is Abbe Dalla Piccola – a forger, dealer in illicit materials,  masquerader, yukkie person –  he specifically hates Jews, Germans, the French, Christians (Lutherans, Catholics), Italians, Masons and Jesuits.  He may be losing his mind.
