Africa Reading Challenge

Kinna Reads:

Challenge:   To read 5 books from or about Africa – fiction or nonfiction – I’ve added from 1 from each of 5 geographic areas.

These are basically planned because I don’t know if my general reading will take me to where I want to go –

East Africa:

by Farah Nurruddin (Somalia)
1986 / 288 pages
rating – 8.5

Excellent although difficult reading in many ways. Setting is the Somalia-Ethiopia War of 1977.

South Africa:

Blessed Are the Dead
by Malla Nunn (South Africa/Australia)
2012 / 336 pages
read by Humphrey Bower  9h 7m  (A+)
rating:   A /  crime

**  This really was a good book dealing with the reality of apartheid in terms of a murder mystery.

West Africa:
The Fishermen
by Chigozie Obioma’

North Africa:
Karnak Cafe
by Naguib Mahfouz

Central Africa (I had to stretch Central Africa a bit to include what is now Rwanda)
An Ice Cream War
by William Boyd
1982 / 397 pages
rating: 7   / historical fiction
